MENDIP FARMERS’ HUNT. - QUICK GUIDE TO HUNTING 2004-5

The Mendip Farmers’ Hunt will carry out only lawful hunting and pest control activities during the forthcoming season.     These will consist of a combination of:

Ø      Flushing with any number of hounds to a bird of prey

Ø      Trail Hunting and Hound Exercise

Ø      Flushing with two hounds to Guns in accordance with the Hunting Act 2004

Ø      Using hounds to locate fox earths

Ø      Use of a terrier below ground but only with written permission

Ø      Hunting rabbits

Ø      Any combination of the above

Note that the Hunting Act defines the flushing of a wild mammal from cover as Exempt Hunting for the purpose of enabling a bird of prey to hunt the wild mammal and with landowners’ permission.  The Act also states that “a person commits an offence if he hunts a wild mammal with a dog, unless his hunting is exempt”.   Many hunts believe that this is the most appropriate form of exempt hunting to be available and thus we will be trying to flush unspecified quarry to a bird of prey on most days; please note that it is unlikely that we will openly declare the type of mammal that we are flushing to a bird of prey in order to widen our exemption.

Car and Foot Followers     Other than on Public Rights of Way, car and foot followers have no rights of access to land cleared for hunting by the Masters unless they have been given permission for such access by those who have cleared the hunt access. It is vital that the car and foot followers cooperate with this requirement as there are a growing number of landowners who are happy to have the hounds over their land but are deeply unhappy about car and foot followers roaming everywhere.

Subscriptions and Attendance    Subscriptions have been due since 1 May.   Please do not turn up for hunting activities without having first contacted the Hon Secretary to discuss your subscription arrangements for the season.
